Earl weakening, moving into the colder water off the mid Atlantic

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -  Hurricane Earl continues to weaken as it moves north. It was downgraded to a category 1 hurricane as it moved off the Virginia coast this morning.

Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph and further weakening is expected as it moves into colder waters later today.

Gusts along the Cape Fear and surrounding coasts have been below tropical storm force for the most part. A few gusts to 40 mph were reported off New Hanover County. Well offshore, a gust to 47 mph was reported by buoy.   There was one hurricane force wind gust of 75 mph recorded in Pamlico sound early this morning.
