SURF CITY, NC (WECT) - The waves at Surf City are already starting to grow as Hurricane Earl approaches the North Carolina coast.
The storm is not expected to hit Southeastern North Carolina, but it is forecasted to brush the Outer Banks. Although the local area won't get a direct hit, there will still be some effects from the storm such as huge waves, tropical storm force winds, and some beach erosion and rain.
Authorities in Surf City, and around the area, are advising people to stay out of the ocean because of dangerous rip currents associated with the storm.
Members of Ocean Rescue in Surf City are also asking people to specifically stay away from the pier since the waves can sweep people into the structure.
Allan Libbe, the Director of Tourism for Surf City, said many people have been calling to ask if they can visit the coastal town. Libbe says after the storm has passed, Surf City should be a beautiful place to spend the weekend.
