MTYT: Taking your dog to dinner

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - We may be on the way to a whole new meaning for "doggy bags."

Starting this week, Fido can enjoy dining out in North Carolina.  Restaurants in the state now have the option to let you bring your pets.  They won't have the run of the restaurant.  They are only allowed in outdoor dining areas, must be on a leash, and can't come in contact with food.  But they can enjoy the day with you, even while you dine.  It's up to restaurant owners to decide if they want this to happen.

We touched on this subject back in March when the North Carolina legislature was debating it.  My opinion then was that maybe our lawmakers had issues that might need a little more attention.  But surprise, they ignored my advice and kept the issue on their agenda.

So here is my opinion now that we have an actual law.  I'm okay with it.  I felt the same way about smoking.  It should be up to the owner.  And if restaurant or bar owners are okay with the impact of having pets around, good or bad, then that's fine.  It's their profit or loss they have to deal with.  And if we don't like it, we'll just have to "ruff" it.

That's my turn.  Now it's your turn.  To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at
