MTYT: Slow down in school zones

By Gary McNair - bio|email

As our children returned to school this week, there's a lot of excitement in the air.  But with that, comes more responsibility for you and the students.  Hopefully, police will be out and about making sure you and I obey the speed limits in school zones.

The police can't be everywhere.  We know that.    But that is not a reason to take chances, because it's not about avoiding a traffic ticket, it's about avoiding hitting someone.

Yes, we're all in a hurry, but we also know children get excited and don't always think about where they're going.  Sadly, our news department has to cover accidents involving school kids every once in a while.

I even saw it happen once.  I was standing on the corner outside of school waiting for traffic to pass and a young man darted into the street only to meet the right front fender of an oncoming car.  He wasn't hurt too badly, but many others have not been so fortunate.

This is an easily preventable situation.  Pay attention.  Slow down.  And obey the law.  Our children will be better for it.

That's my turn.  Now it's your turn.  To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at
