WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -  On July 23, 2010 a severe thunderstorm in Vivian, SD produced the largest hailstone ever recovered in the United States.  The stone measured 1.9375 pounds breaking the old record of 1.67 pounds from a 1970 hailstone in Coffeyville, Kansas.

The stone was found by Vivian resident Les Scott.  As far as circumference this stone places second behind a 2003 hailstone found in Aurora, Nebraska.  The 2003 Aurora stone measured 18.75 inches while the Vivian stone measured 18.62 inches.
