A Department of Correction van was struck in the rear by a truck on US Highway 64 this morning. Several inmates were hurt. The accident has shut down the highway in both directions. US Highway 64 is a major link to the North Carolina Outer Banks.
Early reports from the state Highway Patrol said three inmates remained trapped in the rear of the van in the highway's westbound lanes at noon. One inmate is reported to still be in the van wreckage at this time.
The patrol and witnesses at the scene say the truck was traveling without a trailer when it hit the van in the rear. The van was transporting inmates from the Tyrrell Prison Work Farm in Columbia.
