Merchant Marines honored at State Port

It's seldom open to the public, but Sunday hundreds had a chance to tour Wilmington's State Port.

The site opened its gates for the Port of Wilmington Maritime Festival. It featured a variety of exhibits, but none as compelling as a ceremony honoring Merchant Marines from World War Two, many of whom did not come home.

Over the years, the Merchant Marines have become instrumental in delivering to troops overseas many of the weapons and cargo loaded in Wilmington.

Later in the day, guests were also treated to a free cruise on the Henrietta III.
