Jon Evans

Jon Evans is marking his 3st year in television news in 2014. He co-anchors "WECT News at 5:30" and "Fox Wilmington News at 10" with Ashlea Kosikowski, and "WECT News at 6pm" and "WECT News at 11pm" with Frances Weller.

Jon's broadcasting career began with a summer job during his high school years at a radio station near his hometown in Pennsylvania. That work continued during his years at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a disc jockey and sports play-by-play commentator for basketball and baseball games. It was an internship at the local television station during the summer between his junior and senior years (1983) that began Jon's television career.

After stops in Gainesville, Florida and New Bern, North Carolina, Jon took a job as News Director and Anchor in Wilmington. After 14 years at the local ABC station, he moved to WECT/Fox Wilmington. In addition to his daily co-anchoring and reporting responsibilities, Jon also leads the political coverage for both stations, organizing and moderating many candidate debates and forums during campaign seasons. Those duties have sent Jon to cover some of the biggest political events in the country, including national party conventions in Charlotte and Boston, and a Presidential debate in Winston-Salem.

Jon has recently been recognized by industry peers for the quality of his work. He was recently named "Anchor of the Year" in Division 2 by the Radio-Television News Directors Association of the Carolinas.  He has also won first place from the RTNDAC for Special Reports on several issues, including the backlog of Veterans' benefits claims at the VA, uncovering local victims of North Carolina's Eugenics programs, and patients caught up in changes happening inside the state's Medicaid system.

In the community, Jon works with many service organizations and non-profit groups to assist those in need. He is the honorary Chair of the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes in Wilmington, having served in that role since losing his father to complications of diabetes in 2001. Jon also served as campaign Chairman for the United Way of the Cape Fear Area in 2009, helping to raise more than $2.1 million for local agencies. Jon also served on advisory boards for the Boy Scouts, Salvation Army and Carolina Canines for Service. He has helped many other local groups such as the Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Communities in Schools, Dancing with the Brunswick County Stars, Chords for a Cause and the Willie Stargell Foundation by emceeing and hosting fundraising events.

Jon considers himself blessed to have a wonderful family. He married Sheila Meyer in 1985 and they have three children: Jonathan is 25 and in law school; Monica is 24 and she recently completed grad school courses; and Abby, who is 19 and a sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill.  But the most important one of the household these days is Henry, the 5-year old chocolate lab who keeps Jon busy during the morning hours and Sheila busy at night.

Away from the television station, Jon loves to play golf, exercise, read novels from his favorite authors, work around the house and play guitar.
