Jon Evans is marking his 35th year in television news in 2018. He anchors “WECT News at 5:30”, co-anchors “WECT News at 6pm” and “WECT News at 11pm” with Frances Weller, and also co-anchors “WECT News at 10” on Fox Wilmington with Ashlea Kosikowski. Jon also hosts and produces the “1on1 with Jon Evans” podcast, which is a free download on sites including Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, TuneIn, iHeart RadioStitcher and YouTube. It can also be seen on wect.com, the WECT News mobile app and on the WECT News channel on ROKU.

Jon’s broadcasting career began with a summer job during his high school years at a radio station near his hometown in Pennsylvania. That work continued during his years at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a disc jockey and sports play-by-play commentator for basketball and baseball games. It was an internship at the local television station during the summer between his junior and senior years (1983) that began Jon’s television career.

After stops in Gainesville, Florida and New Bern, North Carolina, Jon took a job as News Director and Anchor in Wilmington. After 14 years at the local ABC station, he moved to WECT-TV. In addition to his daily co-anchoring and reporting responsibilities, Jon is also the Assistant News Director at WECT-TV, and he leads the station's political coverage, organizing and moderating candidate debates and forums on the national, state and local levels. Those duties have sent Jon to cover some of the biggest political events in the country, including national party conventions in Charlotte and Boston, presidential campaign rallies, and a presidential debate in Winston-Salem.

Jon has recently been recognized by industry peers for the quality of his work. He was named “Anchor of the Year” for the fourth time in 2017 (in addition to 2013, 2014 & 2016) for Division 2 by the Radio-Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas.  He has also won first place awards from the RTDNAC for Special Reports on several issues, including spotlighting the effort to award Purple Hearts to victims of the Fort Hood attack, uncovering victims of the backlog of Veterans’ benefits claims at the VA, assisting local victims of North Carolina’s Eugenics Program, and profiling patients caught up in changes happening inside the state’s Medicaid system.

In the community, Jon works with many service organizations and non-profit groups to assist those in need. He was recently nominated to serve on the Purple Heart Foundation of North Carolina. Jon is the honorary Chair of the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes in Wilmington, having accepted that role after losing his father to complications of diabetes in 2001. Jon has served as Honorary Chair for Relay for Life events in both Brunswick and Pender Counties. In 2009, Jon accepted the challenge to be Campaign Chairman for the United Way of the Cape Fear Are, helping to raise more than $2.1 million for local agencies. Jon also served on advisory boards for the Boy Scouts, Salvation Army and Carolina Canines for Service. He has volunteered his time to help many other local groups including the Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Communities in Schools, Dancing with the Brunswick County Stars, Chords for a Cause and the Willie Stargell Foundation, by emceeing and hosting fundraising events.

Jon considers himself blessed to have a wonderful family. He married Sheila Meyer in 1985 and they have three children: Jonathan is 29 and a Resource Prosecutor with the Administrative Office of the Courts in Raleigh; Monica is 28 and working in the environmental field; and Abby is 24 and recently received her Master's Degree in Teaching. Jon and Sheila share the house now with Henry, their 9-year old chocolate lab who keeps Jon busy during the morning hours and Sheila busy at night.

Away from the television station, Jon loves to play golf, exercise, read novels from his favorite authors, work around the house and play guitar.
