Marine reservists from New England did not expect a tour in Japan when they were mobilized for the Iraq conflict.
But about a thousand of them are getting ready to ship out for Okinawa where United States Marines are based.
The reservists reported to Camp Lejeune expecting to stay about a year. Military officials say the six-month deployment to Okinawa is historic event for reserves.
Once in Japan, the reservists will take on duty for troops returning from Iraq so they can spend time with their families.
