WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The extreme heat and humidity that southeast North Carolina has had to endure for much of June is about to be replaced by a much nicer weather pattern heading into the big July 4th weekend. Before the nice weather arrives on Friday it appears shower and thunderstorm chances will be rather high today and much of tomorrow.
Today and tomorrow a slow moving cool front will slowly drift across southeast North Carolina. This front along with some upper disturbances will tap a moist and unstable airmass in place over the area. The result will be an excellent chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially this afternoon and evening. Localized heavy rain will be the biggest threat but one or two strong to severe thunderstorms maybe possible. Still highs will drop back into the mid 80's.
The really good weather arrives Friday and lasts through Monday. A strong Canadian high centered over the Ohio valley will slide into the mid Atlantic through the weekend. This will lead to sunny or mostly sunny days with little chance of any rain. Highs will rise from the mid 80's Friday to near 90 on Monday. Overnight lows will drop back into the mid and upper 60's. Humidity levels will be quite tolerable. Great weather is in store for the Battleship Blast Sunday Evening and Monday's Fourth of July Festival on Monday.
