After a crime-filled winter in Wilmington, police say the warmer temperatures have been accompanied by a reduction in law breaking. They credit a new strategy for street patrols. Captain Randy Pait says officers are scrambling to respond to hundreds of crime calls a week. That's when department heads got together to discuss a new approach for enforcement.
Instead of random patrolling, WPD is targeting specific areas based on what their intelligence is telling them. Aside from staying visible, officers found that when nabbing the little guys they could in turn help solve some of the bigger crimes like armed robberies, and burglaries. But police aren't getting too comfortable. They know that as quick as the numbers went down, they can go right back up.
