COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - After a survey of Columbus County Thursday, the National Weather Service has determined that no tornado landed in that area Wednesday.
There were several reports of a funnel cloud north of Whiteville Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service interviewed witnesses, evaluated radar images and pictures from the public before determining that indeed there was no tornado.
WECT received pictures from Chris Cawley that show a funnel type shape in the sky around the Whiteville area. The NWS says those are called scud clouds. Witnesses told the National Weather Service that the cloud formation remained in the area around 15 minutes.
The NWS also says there was no damage in the area.
