An Iraqi hospital says one man was killed and at least 16 others wounded in a shooting today in a town west of Baghdad.
It was the second shooting this week in Fallujah involving American troops from the 82nd Airborne Division and local anti-American demonstrators. There have not been any reports of American casualties.
Protesters threw rocks and shoes at a compound the paratroopers are using as a base, and troops opened fire. United States officers say soldiers in a passing convoy fired, along with soldiers in the compound.
One officer says it appears the soldiers in the convoy had come under automatic weapons fire. One protester says he and others will keep up their rallies, pledging to keep the Americans "on edge."
United States officers have been meeting with Fallujah's mayor and local Muslim clerics to try to avert more violence.
