Worker killed

A construction worker was killed early today on Interstate 40/85 when a tractor-trailer hit him as he worked on a painting crew.

The victim is identified as Thomas Ray Myers of Troy, an employee of Blythe Construction Company in Greensboro. The incident occurred about 5:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the interstate between Burlington and Greensboro.

A work crew was painting lane stripes on the highway and the State Highway Patrol says Myers was trying to retrieve a small piece of equipment in the road. The patrol says Myers tripped and fell into the path of a tractor-trailer.

The patrol says the truck was not speeding and the driver tried to avoid hitting Myers. The patrol adds that no charges will be filed against the trucker.
