Police in two states are looking for a nine-year-old boy they believe was abducted by his mother from elementary school.
Waynesville police say Blake McKenzie Franklin was last seen at Central Elementary School getting into a dark green SUV-type vehicle Wednesday morning.
Witnesses told police the child's mother, identified as Cynthia Marlene Hutchins Burton, came to the school and said she was taking her son out of class. Police say a teacher tried to determine whether Burton had custody of her son. Before she could complete the check, the boy was gone.
Burton had joint custody of the child with Robert Franklin, her former husband. Police say the child was living with his father, and that a court on Wednesday gave Franklin full custody of the child.
Waynesville police are working with law enforcement in western North Carolina and police in Ocala, Florida, where they believe Burton may be headed.
