NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Republican voters in New Hanover County will head to the polls again next month for a runoff election.

The race for New Hanover County commissioner was neck and neck for Brian Berger and incumbent Bill Caster.  Official numbers show Berger came within 200 votes of Caster, and Berger wants a rematch.

"Voters are eager for change," said Berger. "They are sick of the corruption and they want someone who is going to address the issues that matter most to them."

Berger feels Caster should step down, even before June's primary, but Caster has other plans.

"He came in third!" said Caster.  "If anyone should step down, it ought to be him."

The runoff election will take place June 22, where either Caster or Berger will move on to the general election in November.

Rick Catlin was the top vote getter for the Republicans in New Hanover County.
