NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Three Republican incumbents were on the ballot in the New Hanover County School Board primary race, and all of them will advance to the general elections in November.
But it was political newcomer Derrick Hickey who was the leading candidate, securing one spot and beating out incumbents Ed Higgins, Janice Cavenaugh and Don Hayes.
Hickey and his supporters were in good spirits throughout the night since he was in the lead from the beginning. He thinks voters believe in his conservative values and beliefs that true education starts at home.
Higgins said he's thrilled voters have given him another chance to run for the school board race in November. He's a self proclaimed "public servant."
