WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Republicans Thom Goolsby and Michael Lee met for a debate Thursday night in the race for North Carolina Senate.
The event was co-hosted by WECT, local NPR affiliate WHQR and the Star News. WECT News anchor Jon Evans asked questions of the candidates as part of the panel.
Goolsby and Lee are both conservative attorneys based out of Wilmington, but have spent much of their campaigns trying to set themselves apart. Recently, that has led to some negative campaigning.
Lee defended his advertising Thursday.
"I think it's important for people who are running for office, people who are in office to point out when they think that their opponent or someone in government is not telling the truth," said Lee.
But Goolsby believes that is what lost Lee the election in November 2008.
"These are the same kind of tactics I guess that Mr. Lee used against Ms. Boseman and he lost," explained Goolsby. "And I believe it's going to happen again."
Both men support reducing taxes, lifting the state cap on charter school and offshore drilling.
The primary will be held Tuesday, May 4th.
