Michael Lee says transportation priorities need to shift

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - One of two Republican candidates for the State Senate out of New Hanover County says transportation priorities need to change for the region.

Michael Lee appeared live on WECT News at 5:30 Wednesday to discuss his platform.

"We have to prioritize by project for each region," Michael Lee said.  Lee thinks the I-40 bypass needs to move up the priority list, while the Cape Fear Skyway bridge may have to wait a little while.

At this point, Lee says light rail is not on the radar.

"Light rail has not been proven to be cost effective," Lee said because of the up front infrastructure costs associated with the project.

Lee took questions from WECT viewers including one about whether the state government should regulate energy drinks among children.

"I think we can deal with warnings. Parents need to focus in on talking with their children about some of these things," Lee said.

As far as annexation laws, Lee says some municipalities have overstepped their bounds by annexing areas involuntarily.  He says that's not how the annexation law is intended for use.

Lee faces Thom Goolsby in the Republican primary.  The winner will oppose Frank Leutze in the fall.
