According to an IRS press release, 1.5 million of the 3.7 million tax returns filed in North Carolina were done electronically, and that number is expected to go up. The IRS web page can direct you to a series of companies that will file your federal taxes for free electronically if you meet certain age, income, and residency requirements.
One of those sites is esmarttax.com, which offers North Carolina residents free federal returns, but they do charge for state returns. After you register, start a new tax return by clicking on the link on the left side of the page. The 1040 and 1040EZ return forms are available as are the 4868 and 2350 extension request forms. Each starts off asking a series of questions that begin your return.
