WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Reverend James Utley plans to run for a seat in Raleigh. He will be seeking the House seat in District 18, representing parts of New Hanover and Pender Counties.

The seat is currently held by Sandra Spaulding-Hughes, who announced she will not run for re-election.

Utley is a native of Wilmington, a community leader and former president of the Wilmington Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance.

"For more than twenty years, I have worked endlessly in the community and surrounding areas to help ensure equality for all, and giving a voice to those who were unable to speak for themselves," Utley said in a statement. He plans to continue to work by focusing on jobs, quality education for all, redistricting as it will affect the citizens of southeastern North Carolina, and senior citizens' issues.

He plans to file for office on Monday, February 22, at 12:30pm, at the New Hanover County Board of Elections.
