NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Superior Court Judge Jay Hockenbury has pledged to not accept or solicit contributions in his bid for re-election this year.
Hockenbury announced his desire Sunday night to continue in the office that he's held since 1995 in the Fifth Judicial District.
Judge Hockenbury says there are several reasons for not taking donations, including the fact that we are in tough economic times, he is well known in the community and contributions from attorneys, developers and others who have an interest in judicial decisions leave a question in some minds as to impartiality.
Hockenbury did accept contributions in an earlier run for office. Local attorney Norwood Blanchard III has indicated he will challenge Hockenbury for the office of judge this year.
The filing period to run for office begins Monday.
