WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Former UNCW chancellor James Leutze announced Friday he will run for New Hanover County's District 9 Senate seat.

In addition to being UNCW chancellor from 1990-2003, Leutze has served several posts in state government including the Coastal Resource and Marine Fisheries Commissions.

He is currently part of the Offshore Energy Commission and the State Shore and Beach Association.

Leutze will run, pending approval from the State University System Board of Governors, on the Democratic ticket.

Republican challengers include Thom Goolsby and Michael Lee, with Wilmington councilwoman Kristi Tomey announcing she plans to run as an independent.

Boseman recently said she would not seek re-election, but plans to run for a new open judge position.

The filing period begins February 8.
