NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office has been awarded a grant for over $87,000 to pay for new technology.
"For us to get some equipment to help keep not only the guys safer, but also the citizens, I think it's good," said McMahon. "It helps us act quicker and it's always positive when we get things like this."
The $87,463 grant was presented Tuesday on behalf of the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.
Sheriff Ed McMahon says the money will be used to buy a device to allow its bomb team robot to operate wirelessly. With the wireless device, the bomb team's robot may be able to travel about three quarters of a mile.
The money will also be used to buy spectrometers, which are hand held instruments used to identify toxic industrial chemicals, narcotics, weapons and explosives.
