NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Dredging is expected to begin this week at Masonboro Island.
More than 500,000 cubic yards of sand will be taken from Masonboro Inlet in Wrightsville Beach then dispersed to the island.
Some of the sand will funnel down to the center of Wrightsville Beach around Johnny Mercer's Pier, because that area is sensitive to storm surges, according to Town Manager Bob Simpson.
The $22 million project must be complete by May 1, 2010. Federal funds are paying for 65 percent of the bill, and the rest of the money is coming from a hotel tax.
