WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington City Councilwoman Kristi Tomey plans to run for an open State Senate seat in New Hanover County next year.
Tomey says she will start the paperwork process Tuesday, which would put her name on the ballot as an Independent candidate in November.
Tomey does not belong to the Democratic or Republican parties in New Hanover County, so she would have to collect nearly 6,000 signatures on a petition by June 25th in order to get her name on the ballot.
In November, Senator Julia Boseman announced she was not running for re-election.
"I've been looking at that seat for awhile. I think it's a natural progression from working in (a) municipality where you get the sense of exactly what people need and you can only change the laws directly if you go to Raleigh and do that," said Kristi Tomey.
Tomey says she will utilize social media like Facebook and her website to collect the thousands of signatures needed to get her name on the ballot.
