WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A portion of the Westbound lane of Market Street at the intersection with Front Street will be closed beginning Tuesday, as part of the Front Street Improvement Project.
Westbound motorists headed toward the river on Market Street will have to turn South onto Front Street. Eastbound motorists will not be affected.
Because the entire block of North Front Street, between Market Street and Princess Street is already closed to traffic, motorists traveling North on Front Street will only be able to turn right onto Market Street.
The closure is expected to last from the morning of January 19 through the afternoon of January 22, though work in this area will continue for several weeks.
The Front Street Improvement Project is a joint effort between the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority and the city. It involves the replacement of existing water and sewer pipes, and is expected to be complete in July.
Improvements will also be made to the streetscape, including new sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, benches, and traffic signals.
Sidewalks and businesses will remain open throughout the project.
