WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - People packed the MLK Center on 8th Street in downtown Wilmington on Saturday to honor the birthday of Martin Luther King with a big celebration.

The biggest crowds gathered on the bleachers to watch kids play basketball in a friendly tournament.

Arts and crafts and games entertained others and when lunch time came around there was plenty of food for everyone.

Volunteers say this event is all possible thanks to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"Without the things that he accomplished we wouldn't be here today. It's kind of a mixed pot today with everybody that's here and on the team, and it's basically a great celebration," says Rosalind Cade, a volunteer of the event.

Saturday's event was put on by volunteers and was free to the public.
