WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Hundreds of people ate at the Chick-Fil-A on Oleander Drive Thursday night to help a police officer's family.
The restaurant partnered with the Wilmington Police Department to raise money in memory of Sergeant Jody McPherson.
The WPD officer died last month of brain cancer and left behind a wife and two young sons.
Between 5 PM and 8 PM, everyone who ate in the Chick-Fil-A automatically donated 15% of their money to a fund for the McPherson family.
"Jody's part of our family and we're a close-knit organization," says Chief Ralph Evangelous. "We take care of one another and Jody died. It was not line-of-duty. He has two 2-yr old twins and we have to try to help take care of them. It's going to be tough, it's going to be tough on them growing up without a dad and we're here to help."
Chief Evangelous tells us the department hopes to raise enough money to pay for McPherson's children to go to college.
