NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Last year, New Hanover County officials decided to stop using the gas chamber and only use injections to euthanize animals.
Now they are selling the gas chamber and will use the money from the sale to help other animals.
Director of New Hanover County Animal Services Jean McNeil believes the chamber will gain a lot of attention because it is a high quality device at a discount rate.
County officials bought the chamber three years ago for about $1,500, and McNeil expects to get plenty of that money back.
McNeil says the money would go towards buying a new industrial strength washer and dryer for the shelter.
"We do a lot of laundry here with the surgery candidates," said McNeil. "With the towels we use in those kennels and also bedding for the animals at the shelter, it would be wonderful to get hold of that."
It is unclear who would buy the chamber, but McNeil expects it to go to another animal control agency in the state that may not have been able to afford one in the past due to tight budgets.
County commissioners said they will discuss auctioning off the chamber during its next meeting.
