NHC Commission race gets another candidate

Reported by Scott Saxton email

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A local attorney and real estate broker is throwing her hat in the ring for a seat on the New Hanover County Commission.

Deborah Butler is the owner of Port City Properties, which started business in 1996.  She also is an active attorney.  Butler is also involved in several civic activities.

Butler said in an emailed statement that she wants to run to bring trust back to government.

"If I had to pick the primary reason motivating my candidacy, I would say that I want to help create a Commission that restores the public trust. The recent salary/bonus scandal at the Alcoholic Beverage Commission is symptomatic of a leadership that has grown complacent, has a sense of entitlement to their positions, and feels that back room dealing is acceptable. I do not find it acceptable," Butler wrote.

Butler also said in her statement that she does not feel Titan is a proper fit for the county because of the many watersheds here.  Titan America has plans to build a cement plan in Castle Hayne, pending permit approval.

Butler joins current commissioner Bill Caster, Napier Fuller, Rick Catlin, Charles Dorman and Dale Smith as candidates for the two open seats on the commission.

Long-time commissioner Bobby Greer is not expected to run for re-election.
