NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office turned a staff meeting into a surprise ceremony Wednesday.

Deputy Charles Smith was called to the front of the room by Sheriff Ed McMahon, but instead of getting a new assignment, the sheriff handed him a new badge.

Smith was promoted to corporal, but he will still act as the sheriff's public information officer.

Wednesday he was honored for his dedication to a job that runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Smith came to the county from the Carolina Beach Police Department.  He said the biggest change has been the dress code - handing in his shorts for a full uniform.
