OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) - The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward for information regarding a trend of injuring pelicans, leaving them to die.
Nearly a dozen injured pelicans found in Brunswick County
Earlier this month we reported 11 pelicans had died, but now the total is rising. Wildlife experts believe someone is purposely breaking the bird's wings over the side of a boat.
Mary Ellen Rogers, who operates a small wildlife shelter in Oak Island, has been taking in as many of the pelicans as possible. Since the wings are broken so severely, she says they will never heal and need to be euthanized.
Rogers tried to make the pelicans as comfortable as possible before she took them to a local veterinarian, who volunteered to put the birds down.
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $2,500 reward for information about how the pelicans are being injured.
