Lottery phone call scam reported in Brunswick Co.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a telephone scam that is targeting the elderly.

According to the sheriff's office, the scam starts with a phone call from another country saying the victim has won an international lottery.  In order to claim the winnings, they say they must send a transaction fee (around $700-$800) to the caller.

If the victim sends the money, another phone call is made to the victim stating they are the "consumer protection agency."

The new caller tells the victim the previous caller from the lottery company was a scam, and if the victim sends a transaction fee to them they will be eligible to claim the prize.  Those fees are in a similar range as the first caller.

Anyone who receives a phone call with a scenario similar to the one explained above, is asked to call the local authorities.
