NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a man early Friday morning who admitted to killing his landlord earlier in the week with a baseball bat.

Detectives say Dennis Benjamin Roy confessed to assaulting Carmine Bruno with a bat several times on Tuesday, while he was sleeping.

According to deputies, Roy was upset over the way Bruno spoke with his wife.  Mrs. Bruno was given an unknown medication, according to the report, which kept her in an incoherent state for the past couple days.

Roy was a tenant of the Bruno family at their home on 101 South Branch Road, where the alleged crime took place.

Mrs. Bruno contacted her brother to let him know what happened Thursday, prompting a call to 911.  Listen to the 911 call, by clicking the video icon to the right.

Roy made his first court appearance Friday, where he limped into the court room showing little emotion.

He is charged with first degree murder and being held in the New Hanover County Detention Facility without bond.

Authorities believe the beating was pre-meditated, because the victim had extra wounds after he was knocked out.

Roy's next court appearance is scheduled for January 29.
