WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Work officially began Tuesday on Front Street after city leaders held a ground breaking ceremony.
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo and other city officials broke ground with golden shovels at the intersection of Market and Front Streets.
Construction began Monday to replace aging water and sewer pipes, and enhance the streetscape with new sidewalks, crosswalks, and landscaping.
Front Street between Market and Princess will be blocked of for some time, but businesses are operating as usual.
"One of my worries though during the course of this construction is to make sure that everybody knows these businesses are still open and making sure that we don't lose businesses during the time that we're doing this construction," said Wilmington City Council member Ronald Sparks.
Stage two of the project should begin in about three months and will block off Princess to Chestnut Streets.
The $1.8 million project is expected to be finished by July 2010.
