ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A man from Onslow County is building his family's dream home for only $140,000.

Eric Cagle is building a monolithic dome for his wife and three kids off Flamingo Lane in Sneads Ferry.

The dome is suppose to be energy efficient and able to withstand natural disasters  like tornados and hurricanes.

He says instead of building a wood house from the inside out, they're building it from the outside in.

Cagle got the idea after researching a cheaper way to build a house on his ocean view property.

He says his family has outgrown their "square home," and buying a similar home would be too expensive.

So instead, Cagle decided to build a big, round, orange dome - built to last for 500 years.

"So we're not looking at just one families house," said Cagle.  "After we're dead and gone and our kids are done with it somebody else will end up with this."

The three-story structure will have eight windows, four bedrooms, a full kitchen, bathroom, attic, and a spiral staircase leading to the top.
