WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)- Friends of a 23-year-old woman who died in an apartment fire Saturday morning are talking about her life and what she had planned for the future.
Early morning fire kills UNCW graduate
Rory Michaelson recently received her teaching degree, and was set to begin a new job in New Bern.
Her boyfriend, 23-year-old Cory Benoit, was with Michaelson the night of the fire. He is now at the Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill, listed in critical condition.
Friends say Michaelson worked at Ruby Tuesday at the Independence Mall to support herself through college. They say she was a hard worker and a great friend.
"She's an amazing person," said her friend Lucas Haskins. "The type of person if you were friends with once, you'd never want to lose her friendship."
Brandon Angelilli is another friend of Michaelson. He remembers the night she came in to Ruby Tuesday to tell everyone that she got her degree.
"She came in here right afterwards and talked to a few of us," said Angelilli. "She told us she got her teaching degree and was really excited."
Angelilli says Michaelson wanted to focus on special education, and that she was looking forward to her first teaching job. Now, her friends will never get to see her live out her dream.
"She was literally 8 days away from leaving Monday," said Angelilli. "We were planning going away parties and stuff."
Three other people were injured in the fire and were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. They have been treated and released. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
