WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Contractors began shutting down parts of Front Street Monday, so they could begin work on a joint project between the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority and the City of Wilmington.
Over the next six months, crews will replace aging sewer and water lines and re-design the entire streetscape.
"The way that we are re-doing the streetscape to make wider sidewalks, more amenities, more pedestrian-friendly, is going to be more retail-friendly and make downtown a better place for shopping," said Dylan Lee with the City of Wilmington
While crews are busy improving the look of downtown, restaurants and bar owners are looking for ways to keep downtown Wilmington in business.
Charles Scott at Front Street Brewery said they plan to host more events in their new room upstairs and feature more specials.
Many downtown Wilmington business owners will start a new campaign this spring called, "Do it Downtown," to help remind customers they're still open.
"We want to just keep people coming down," said Scott. "So if everyone's together, I think it's going to work."
