Folks take a frosty New Year's swim for charity

SURF CITY, NC (WECT) -  For some in Surf City, New Year's Day meant braving the elements with a frosty swim into the ocean for the annual Dolphin Dip.

Brian Moxey started Topsail's Dolphin Dip eight years ago to benefit the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center.  Their goal is to bring people together to celebrate life.

"The Lower Cape Fear Hospice and life care center - I like doing this in conjunction with them, because its a great way to celebrate life," said Moxey.  "So many people that the hospice deals with would trade places in a second."

The dip drew in thousands of people, including WECT's Casey Roman.  Each year the crowd comes with donations, costumes, and determination.

Three people won prizes for having the best costumes, but everyone who made the plunge are winners for doing something outrageous for charity.
