IRS puts the brakes on selling county gas to non-profits

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Dozens of service organizations in Brunswick County are pumping out more cash for fuel.

The fire department in Bolivia used to get gas tax free from the county, but now the IRS is putting on the brakes.  They won't allow the county to sell gas to non-profit groups that aren't part of local government.

Now, firefighters in Bolivia have to get gas at a higher price in a place that's not designed for oversized vehicles.

Other organizations affected by the loss of the county's gas program include some law enforcement agencies and Brunswick County schools.
