BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - State Senator R.C. Soles announced he would not run for re-election, leaving the many to wonder who will represent the Democratic Party in the District 8 Senate Race next year.
Soles will not seek re-election
David Redwine, who served as a House Representative from 1984 until 2002, said he is considering running for the open seat. Redwine currently works in Shallotte in the insurance business.
Republican Bettie Fennell plans to run for the Senate seat again next year. She ran against incumbent R.C. Soles last year and lost.
Fennell said she wishes soles would run for re-election, instead of ending his political career. She believes she would have an easier time defeating Soles, rather than a challenger.
"His favorable ratings are way, way down, so we just knew he would be the easiest one to beat," said Fennell. "The campaign next year's probably going to be a little bit tougher, but we're still confident that I'll win."
Fennell said she's surprised Soles didn't resign so an appointed Democrat could have taken his place.
