PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Land surrounding Poplar Grove Plantation has been set a side to prevent further development.
The owner of the land, Jan Lewis, has voluntarily entered into a conservation agreement. As part of that agreement Lewis has promised that no construction will take place in a 15 acre plot.
The agreement, according to Plantation spokesperson Camilla Herlevich, would still be legal even if the land was sold or bequeathed to another family member.
The agreement ensures that site of the historic 1800's farmstead, located just north of Wilmington on the rapidly developing US 17 corridor will be preserved.
Jan Lewis, who's family established a non-profit foundation that preserves and manages the mansion itself, said: "We know how special Poplar Grove is, and are dedicated to education, preservation and service to the community. Our conservation agreement with the Coastal Land Trust will help us preserve Poplar Grove's lands for many generations."
