WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A man is being treated for burns after catching on fire during a bike ride in Wilmington.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, a 40-year-old man was apparently riding his bike on Chestnut Street when he suddenly caught fire.
The victim ran, but nearby residents came to his aid, covering him and dowsing the fire with water.
Authorities say the victim was alert and conscious at the scene. He told first responders he lighted a cigarette when clothing caught fire.
The man was taken into surgery for sustaining serious burns from his chin downward, so investigators have not been able to interview him further.
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
