ROCKY POINT, NC (WECT)- Deputies with the Pender County Sheriff's Office are investigating a murder that took place in Rocky Point.
According to authorities, deputies were called to an area just east of the intersection of N.C. 133 and Cheshire Road in Rocky Point just before 5:30 Sunday morning.
Officials with the Pender County Sheriff's Office say 23-year-old Tiffany Louise Dawkins, of Castle Hayne, was shot and killed Sunday morning.
According to the medical examiner, Dawkins died of gunshot wounds. A 911 dispatcher confirmed the area was the scene of a murder.
Bettie Walker has felt secure inside her home at the intersection where the apparent murder took place for almost 50 years. She lives in an area where neighbors are friends and family.
"[It's a] very quite neighborhood," said Bettie's care taker Mardella Lowry. "You look out for one another, even though you don't see them they know what's going on."
But, a day after Sunday's shooting, no one seems to know exactly what happened. Neighbors recall hearing sirens and seeing fire trucks and flashing lights.
The Pender County Sheriff's Office say they found Dawkins somewhere between Bettie's home and the Cape Fear Elementary and Middle School.
So far, that's all the information that has been released, leaving neighbors asking questions about what really happened.
What happened Christmas weekend? Who's responsible? Where is the shooter?
"They'd love to know, because they live here and anyone you talk to - nothing like this has ever happened around here," said Lowry.
