Fire leaves four Columbus County families homeless

Four families are without a home after a late night fire destroyed an apartment building in Whiteville.

Whiteville fire crews were called to the Columbus Court housing project just before 11:00 Monday night. When they arrived on the scene, the complex was engulfed in flames and heavy smoke. The blaze quickly spread throughout the building, completely destroying the inside of four apartments. It is believed that all the residents made it out safely, but one firefighter was transported to the hospital for chest pains.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but officials say they believe flames started in the second floor. The Red Cross responded to the scene early this morning to assist the displaced families.
