WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Cyndi Farmer gave away donated toys to needy families who would have otherwise gone without this holiday season.
This is the 13th year Farmer has collected gifts for those in need. She smiles with every box she unloads, knowing each present will make someone's Christmas brighter.
"I grew up with my brother and my father, single dad who struggled and I struggled also raising my children as a single mom and Christmas has just been my favorite time of the year," said Farmer.
The Carolina Beach resident usually gives the gifts to schools or churches to then give to families, but this year she invited people to her home.
Along with toys, she had a gift for herself - for the first time, she got to meet the people she helped.
"Just to see the smiles, because you hand it off, it's like, you don't get to see where it goes," said Farmer. "You know you did a good thing, you don't get to see where it goes, but this is a good thing because you get to see them smile and you get to see the reaction on their little faces."
The recession is making it especially difficult for many families this year, but despite the economy, Farmer hopes to give people a true Christmas miracle.
That miracle may have happened for one little girl. All Jayna Smith wanted for Christmas was a new bike, but her and her mother, Kerri, weren't going to have much under the tree this year.
Farmer drew names for some of the bigger gifts and Santa Claus must have put Jayna in a special place on the nice list this year, because out of all the names she won.
Jayna now has a new tiny pink bicycle but a huge Christmas miracle.
"That's something that a lot of people don't do," said Kerri. "There's a lot of other people out there whose kids won't even have Christmas and for her to come out here and do this and donate her time and money - she's got a really good heart."
As they load the bike into the car, Jayna knows this Christmas will be a special one thanks to the kindness of Cyndi Farmer - a name that is undoubtedly written on many people's nice lists this year.
