NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Despite recently losing his job, one Wilmington man is turning his loss into his neighborhood's gain.

Kenny Howell worked for Southern Optimist for more than 15 years, but the down economy cost him his job.

So instead of being down himself, Howell has used his time off from work to light up Bedrock Court in the Stoneybrook subdivision with holiday cheer.

"Whenever someone drives down our street it just looks like raining lights, because everywhere you look there's different colors," said Howell.

He says the project has helped him get through this tough time in his life.

"It's kind of raising my spirit to see everybody doing it," said Howell.  "I did lose my job back in April and it's kind of raising my spirit a little bit."

Neighbors say the idea to transform the neighborhood into a sea of lights came from a subdivision in Florida and has brought everyone together.

"We've always been close, but it has really brought us together," said Frank Chapman.  "It's helped us get closer."
