PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Family and friends gathered in Pender High School's gymnasium Tuesday morning to say goodbye to a woman who was killed in a traffic accident last week.
Pender High physics and chemistry teacher Daisy Smith Larkins died in a crash on N. College Road Dec. 17, according to the NC Highway Patrol.
Larkins was a teacher for more than 30 years. Principal John Spainhour said she was a great teacher and person who made a difference in other lives.
"She was such a lady, you just felt compelled to respect her, to love her, and to please her," said former student Sylvia Bellamy.
Those who knew her best say the community has lost a peacemaker, a faithful church member, and an advocate for education.
"She always had a smile on her face," said student Jenna Keith. "She was real approachable. Many of the students said she's the best teacher they ever had."
During the service a soloist sang traditional gospel music, and a photo montage of Larkins was displayed on a projector screen.
Larkins is buried at the Larkins Family Cemetery near the Long Creek Community in Pender County.
