NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Troopers say a woman from Rocky Point is dead after a crash Thursday night in a construction zone in New Hanover County.
Trooper Troutman of the NC Highway Patrol said Daisy Smith Larkins died in a crash on N. College Road.
They believe she did not see the traffic guards as her car hit a forklift, moving material across the highway near Parmele Road.
Larkins had been a physics and chemistry teacher at Pender High School for nearly thirty years. Her students sat silently Friday, saddened by the loss of their teacher.
"The faculty is grieving, the students are grieving because we did lose a great teacher," said principal John Spainhour.
Grief counselors supported students, staff, and teachers upset over Larkins' sudden death.
Larkins' daughter Crystal was the last to speak to her mother before the accident. She said her mom was worried about letting her dog out.
Crystal is having a hard time dealing with her mother's death, but said she is trying to be strong.
'It's going be hard, but we have family, friends and students reaching out - people I don't even know - so, I guess she touched them in a special way," said Crystal.
"She was a great teacher," said Spainhour. "She was a good person and she made a difference."
The public is invited to attend Larkins' funeral which will be held inside the gym at Pender High School, Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 11:00 in the morning.
